Nantucket History
Discovered in 1602 and settled in 1609, “The Faraway Land,” as translated from the native language of the Wampanoag tribe, Nantucket Island was once a major whaling port and is now considered by many to be heaven on earth. Nantucket began a successful whaling industry in 1750 when whales were discovered off the coast, but the industry declined in the 1880’s and the tourism industry took off. The island’s year-round population is approximately 10,000 but swells to 50,000-60,000 during the summer months. Plan your Nantucket bed and breakfast vacation in advance and be prepared to be swept off your feet as you find the perfect island destination.
