Nantucket Villages
SIASCONSET
Aside from the town of Nantucket, most of the island is residential, except for two notable villages, easily accessible from your island bed and breakfast. Siasconset (nicknamed 'Sconset) is on the east side of the island. In the days when factories rendered whale oil, Nantucket Town residents would flee to Siasconset to avoid the heavy smells. These days it's a peaceful community with enchanting rose-covered cottages and a handful of businesses. It has lots of beachfront and conservation areas close by, all of which make it a great day trip from town, easily accessible via bike or public transportation.
MADAKET
The other village, Madaket, is a rambling fishing village at the western end of the island. The views are extraordinary, and the casual atmosphere is perfect after a day at the beach before heading home to the comfort of your bed and breakfast. To the north and east are creeks, ponds and marshes, and to the west and south, the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches face west, guaranteeing a fabulous sunset at the end of every sunny day. The fishing is excellent and Smith's Point is a treat for 4-wheelers. Ask your bed and breakfast innkeeper about special arrangements for village outings and excursions.
