In 1671 Governor General Francis Lovelace chartered the settlement of Tisbury, what is commonly known as Vineyard Haven, in exchange for two barrels of codfish paid annually at the bridge in New York. Tisbury was named for the English hometown of Martha’s Vineyard Governor Mayhew. The area was under the dominion of the Duke of York until 1673 when the settlers of the Vineyard petitioned for a change in Governance, at which point control of the Vineyard was turned over to neighboring Massachusetts.

Incorporated in 1671, the town of Tisbury was originally known as Homes Hole and then later Holmes Hole. By 1850 the village was a bustling marine port due to the access available to large vessels. In 1892 Tisbury was divided into Tisbury and West Tisbury, with Tisbury today being known as Vineyard Haven. Vineyard Haven thrives as a tourist destination, drawing visitors to its charming bed and breakfasts.
