Attractions

Lake Michigan is South Haven’s biggest and most popular draw, and it’s no wonder. It’s the third biggest of the Great Lakes and the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world. The lake is about 300 miles long and averages 75 miles across, covering an area equal to the combined areas of the states of Maryland, Massachusetts and Delaware. South Haven’s many Lake Michigan beaches, including North Beach, South Beach and Packard Park, provide wonderful opportunities to sail, swim, picnic, water ski and more. Fans of fishing will enjoy reeling in some of the best trout, salmon and perch to be found. The Black River Harbor accommodates over 1,000 boat slips, and several municipal marinas with seasonal, transient, and launching facilities, making boating a top attraction.

The Kal-Haven Trail is a 34.5-mile long trail that wanders through South Haven and the surrounding area’s most beautiful and scenic areas. Visitors can hike, bike and even ski this former railroad bed between South Haven and Kalamazoo. Be sure to keep an eye out for local wildlife like deer, wild turkeys, herons, and partridge.

South Haven is the blueberry capital of the world, and people of all ages will enjoy the abundance of fruit picking that is available at various times during the year. Although known for blueberries, South Haven serves up delicious peaches, apples, apricots, cherries and more. Vegetable lovers will savor a cornucopia of fresh vegetables. The National Blueberry Festival is an annual event that celebrates this succulent bounty, offering loads of entertainment, family fun, and of course, every blueberry product known to mankind.

The Michigan Maritime Museum captures the rich maritime heritage of the Great Lakes. The Museum is open year round and features wonderful exhibits and guided tours. People of all ages will get a thrill when they step aboard a replica of a 19th century tall ship, and the fascinating collection of ship and boat models, which includes merchant schooners, passenger steamers, harbor tugs, fishing craft, yachts, modern freighters, and half-hull models will keep visitors engaged for hours.
