Overview of Jackson
Jackson MS is a beautiful town with a turbulent past and a cultured present. Being a Confederate stronghold, Jackson was almost completely burned down three times during the Civil War. Jackson, also gained national attention during the Civil Rights movement when more than 300 Freedom Riders were arrested, signaling the end of the Freedom Ride, although they had planned to continue traveling on to New Orleans, LA. Today the political atmosphere has calmed considerably and “the Crossroads of the South” now preserves many notable historical sites and memories for generations to come. The art complex in downtown Jackson attests to the cultural sophistication of the now forward thinking town. Downtown is also home to a crowd of antique shops, boutiques, and two malls, satisfying any and all shopping urges, and making it possible for the bed and breakfast traveler to shop until they drop. When the sun slips down below the old Mississippi State Capitol building, modeled after the US Capitol building, the slow pace of the Southern town picks up, and you can simply follow the sultry sound of Blues drifting through the muggy air to a hopping Jazz club before heading back to your bed and breakfast to relax in beautiful surroundings after a gratifying day. |
