Cultural Activities in Biloxi
Biloxi may be home to casinos, sandy beaches and water sports, but culturally, Biloxi also offers many can't-miss experiences. One of the more stunning sites to visit is Beauvoir, the home of the president of the confederacy, Jefferson Davis. Stroll around 51 beautiful acres that front the Gulf of Mexico. Feel the history as you visit the cemetery and see the Tomb of the Unknown Confederate Soldier. Beauvoir is a true piece of important American history and it's located on one of the most beautiful sites in Biloxi. For a more modern take on Biloxi, The Bella Bleu Art Studio and Gallery is a must to see. Set in a beautifully restored traditional home and featuring entirely Gulf Coast artists, you'll see everything from mermaid murals to exquisitely designed jewelry. Another must see place is the Hurricane Katrina exhibit located inside the Hancock Bank Building in nearby Gulfport, Mississippi. While Biloxi, with true Southern grit, may have picked up and moved on since the hurricane, it's important that homage is paid to the loss and victims. The Hurricane Katrina exhibit honors and showcases those tragic days by bringing you face to face with the storm and the resiliency of those who withstood it. In fact, the name of the exhibit is "Resilience-- A Visual Portrayal." Artists who were affected by the storm have contributed photographs and artwork that tell their tale. You'll leave the exhibit saddened and yet exhilarated at the triumph of the human spirit. If you've brought your little ones to Biloxi, then never fear, there's also a fun learning activity for them. (They'll be so excited about the "fun" they'll probably forget about the learning!) The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center is one of the world's top 50 children's museums and teaches children all about the cultural and physical landscape of Southern Mississippi. One of the most special exhibits to visit in the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center is another tribute to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Katrina Story Quilts were created by school children depicting their experiences and emotions regarding the hurricane. A child's point of view is unique and compelling, and there is no better way to teach your children about Hurricane Katrina than by showing them the stories of other children.
