Albuquerque's name is derived from the Spanish Duke of Albuquerque. To this day the city is sometimes referred to as the "The Duke City". It was founded in 1706 as a Spanish Colonial out post and the area was primarily a farming community. The Spanish village plaza (Old Town) was the center for the government buildings, homes and a church. When the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railroad finally arrived in 1880, the passenger depot was built two miles east of the plaza and the area was named New Town. Albuquerque incorporated in 1891 and by 1900 it had become a Southwestern town with modern amenities. Today, technology, high-tech private companies and some of Mexico's largest employers are based in Albuquerque.
