Julian History
Founded after the Civil War when Confederate Veterans headed west, the town of Julian California was settled by two cousins who loved the lush meadow between Volcan Mountain and the Cuyamaca Mountains. Named for one of the cousins, Mike Julian, the town had a fleeting gold rush in 1869 when a cattleman found flecks of gold in a Julian creek. The brief gold rush brought pioneers to the area who settled down and began farming the fertile land. Apples flourished in the soil and continue to be a profitable crop for historic Julian California. Visitors from all over now flock to Julian each year to celebrate Apple Days, savor the sweet, succulent bounty from the apple orchards and rejuvenate in a local bed and breakfast.
