Astoria, Oregon City Guide
Astoria, Oregon is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies, & it marks the western end of the Lewis & Clark Trail. Astoria is on the Columbia River & just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean.
Overview of Astoria
As the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains, Astoria was established by fur traders because of its convenient location at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1811. Its real claim to fame, however, was its standing as the home of the explorers Lewis and Clark, who spent the winter there in 1805 and 1806. Because of its central role in the establishment of the American West, Astoria has climbed to the top of the list for many bed and breakfast travelers looking to combine history with fun and excitement. The town of Astoria has cultivated and restored it's past monuments and relics to fine glory; however, it is also sophisticated and modern in its lodging, dining and shopping.
History buffs will find themselves busy all day, as will city dwellers who are seeking a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The heartbeat of Astoria is the waterfront; initially the reason for the town’s settlement, it is now the center of activity. But you need not stay by the waterfront to enjoy Astoria; for a town only 20 miles across, it's jam packed full of historical monuments, museums and fun adventures. The best way to see this wonderful little port city and to experience it to the fullest is through the hospitality of a local bed and breakfast. |
