| Introduction and History | ||||||||||||||||||
Charleston’s history extends back to the late 1600’s when the first English settlers arrived. By 1690 Charleston was the fifth largest city in North America and a bustling seaport. Two of the most historical events in U.S. history transpired in Charleston, the American Revolution and the Civil War. The Old Exchange and Customs House held events for George Washington in 1791 while the signers of the Declaration of Independence frequented the Provost Dungeon. Today the city is the second most productive port in the world and a prime technological and medical research area. | ||||||||||||||||||
