Myrtle Beach, South Carolina City Guide

For over 20 years, Pamela Lanier's Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Travel Guide has been your connection to Myrtle Beach's tourism community with invaluable details on local attractions, restaurants, shopping, museums, history, outdoor recreation and more.

Myrtle Beach “Sea” and Do

With more than 200 sunny days and a temperate year-round climate, Myrtle Beach offers endless hours of swimming, surfing, sailing, and other sun and sand favorites. Take your pick of fishing opportunities: cast off from one of the city’s seven piers or one of the Grand Strand's many boats for a deep sea challenge.

A short distance from Myrtle Beach, the bed and breakfast visitor can enjoy touring the National Historical Landmark known as Brookgreen Gardens. This award winning attraction was founded in 1931 by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington to preserve the native flora and fauna as well as display art objects in a natural setting. The 9200-acre property which displays more than 1200 works of art by 350 sculptors also includes the Lowcountry Zoo which is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. All of the animals within the zoo have either been born or raised in captivity or rehabilitated due to injury and thus would be unable to survive in the wild. To get the most of the Brookgreen Gardens, share your interests with your bed and breakfast innkeepers and ask them for their recommendations. They might be able to share the absolute must-see highlights if your time is limited.

The Bedon-Lucas House will enchant the bed and breakfast history buff. One of five “high houses” still in existence in South Carolina, so named because of the height of the building above the ground, it has been restored and preserved to its former beauty. Though the architecture itself is quite fascinating, the true treasures lie within its walls in the historical artifacts and antiques that have been set out for display.

Myrtle Beach State Park is one of the few underdeveloped natural areas along the Grand Strand. It is a great place to escape the crowds with a picnic, packed especially for you by your bed and breakfast innkeepers. You can also enjoy fishing off a pier, wandering through a maritime forest on the nature trails, learning about the coastal habitat and wildlife at the Myrtle Beach State Park Nature Center or simply listening to the waves crashing onto the sandy shore.

Birdwatchers will appreciate the Huntington Beach State Park with its indigenous southeast coast species, wading birds, ducks and the many ocean birds that can been seen near the park’s jetty.
For the bed and breakfast visitor with a ‘need for speed’ the Myrtle Beach Speedway hosts weekly events that include NASCAR Stock Car races and drifting events. Don’t forget some hearing protection as it can get quite noisy.
