Surf's Up
With it’s beautiful beaches and endless waves, Santa Cruz is a natural magnet for surfers. Named as one of the world’s Top Ten Surfing places, amateurs and professionals come from around the globe to ride the waves. Believed to be where the sport originated over 100 years ago, Santa Cruz celebrates the history of surfing at the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum at the Mark Abbottt Memorial Lighthouse. The museum traces over 100 years of surfing history with exhibits that include original redwood boards, or “planks” as they were called then, photographs, early surf gear and videos showing the sport’s progress over the years. Set high above the bay, visitors are treated to a magnificent view of Monterey Bay and can even catch some live surfers in action.
