The Great Outdoors
Other than its historical landmarks, Fredericksburg is considered by many to be the loveliest part of the state. The Texas Hill Country is a natural haven for hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting and horseback riding. There are ten state parks in the Fredericksburg area where the largest population of white-tailed deer in the state can be found as well as two endangered species of birds, the Golden- Cheeked Warbler and the Red-Eyed Black-Capped Vireo. At the Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area you can see thousands of Mexican free-tail bats darken the summer skies at dusk and the Lost Maples State Natural Area is the perfect spot to see the splendor of fall foliage. Right in town is Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, which locals consider the “crown jewel” of recreational facilities.
