Named in honor of Princess Charlotte who became the Queen of England in 1762 as the wife of George III, Charlottesville, Virginia is nestled in the middle of the Appalachian uplands in an area of low mountains and hills in the midst of Albemarle County. At that time the area’s economy was based on wheat, corn and tobacco, and the early settlers were mostly planters and farmers. In 1790 Charlottesville was given twenty more acres of land and within ten years the population had blossomed. Today Charlottesville is a lovely bed and breakfast destination steeped in history and character.
