Historical Sites in Richmond

Of course, when you rouse yourself from your peaceful relaxation at your bed and breakfast, there's plenty of historical sites to visit in Richmond! You can trace the roots of our country through a visit to Richmond. A natural way to start is with the colonial settlers and on to the founding fathers: One not-to-miss spot is Henricus Historical Park, the site of the second colonial settlement. Or head over to St. John's Episcopal Church and you might even catch a reenactment of Patrick Henry's famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. Next, you'll want to tour Tuckahoe, Thomas Jefferson's plantation. Once you've experienced the highs and lows of the Revolutionary War, you'll want to move on to exploring the Civil War. As the capital of the confederacy and close to the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, Richmond experienced the Civil War and all its horrifying and triumphant results first hand. The very geographical position of Virginia-- sandwiched between the South and North, made it uniquely vulnerable to the horrors of war. You can best visualize this through a tour of Richmond's Civil War battlefields. The easiest and most convenient way to experience this is through participating in the Virginia Civil War Trails Program, self guided driving guides that takes you through more than 400 historically significant sites. Begin this at the Richmond National Battlefield Park Civil War Visitor Center. While here, also make time to visit the American Civil War Center, where Union, Confederate and African-American Civil War stories combine to show each individual experience, but at the same time showing how they all combine into one national tragedy.
