Originally home to numerous Native American tribes, drawn to the area because of its close proximity to Lake Michigan and Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay has a rich maritime history. French explorers arrived in the 1600’s, the British later seized the area from the French, and in 1783 the United States claimed it from the British. From the time when European settlers first arrived, Sturgeon Bay was chosen as the center for commerce and government, and today the city is still thriving with cultural influences derived from all parts of the country. Early settlers made a living in timber and fishing, but by 1900 the city’s main industry headed toward tourism and today the city thrives as a lively tourist destination, drawing visitors to its maritime history, charming bed and breakfasts, picturesque lighthouses, quaint downtown, and scenic waters.
