Estes Park Introduction & History
Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park and your ideal vacation. From the golf courses and wine tasting to the river rafting and bicycle rides, there’s no better opportunity to enjoy the sublime surroundings of nature. To top it off, lodge your stay at an Estes Park bed and breakfast. Many of Estes Park bed and breakfasts take place in a log cabin nestled in the evergreens to give you the peace and comfort that every bed and breakfast fan needs. The outdoors is extremely beautiful during the winter and spring. Grassy meadows, rushing rivers and streams, and ancient aspen trees mingle with small town hospitality to create a picture perfect destination.
Archaeologists attest that Estes Park has been a resort community for 10,000 years, beginning back when Ute and Arapaho Indians settled in the area during the summer months. In October 1859 Joel Estes first arrived in the area on a hunting trip, thinking he was one of the first people to ever be in the valley. He and his wife later moved to the area, thinking it had great potential as a cattle ranch. In 1874 settlers came to the area in great number, supporting themselves in the ranching and tourism businesses. The majestic mountain setting has drawn many visitors, including businessman F.O Stanley who funded road improvements, helped open a bank, sold electricity, and donated property. His famed Stanley Hotel opened in 1909 and still stands today. Named for its earliest settler as well as the geological term for a glacially cut level valley between two mountain ranges, Estes Park was incorporated in 1917 just after the Rocky Mountain National Park was created.
