As the oldest European city in the United States, St. Augustine has a rich history. Before the first English settlers arrived in Jamestown, the Spanish had settled in St. Augustine and established the area as a Spanish power in America. The settlers faced the same setbacks and challenges that other settlers encountered, including plague, famine, and war with the British, French, and Natives, as well as the geographic challenge of hurricanes. In 1763 the British gained control of St. Augustine and though the city was loyal to the British throughout the Revolutionary War, the city returned to Spanish rule in 1784. The Spanish sold St. Augustine to America in 1821, and in 1884 an oil tycoon named Henry Flagler came to the city and invested in its restoration and development. Many wealthy families made St. Augustine their winter home and contributed to the expansion of the old colonial city. Today the city is home to many glorious historic buildings and maintains the look and feel of a 16th century Spanish Colonial walled town with ample bed and breakfasts that charm and delight visitors.
