St. Petersburg Museums and Galleries
Locals are encouraged to display their art in St. Petersburg, you’ll often find stands set up along the pier, down the boulevards, in the center of downtown and more often than not, showcased in galleries. St. Petersburg’s community encourages its artists, setting up locations and special events to support both the artist and connoisseur. Even some of the great masters are on display from Dali, to Monet and Gaugin originals. The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg is said to be the world's most comprehensive collection of permanent works devoted to the famous Spanish master. In addition to the expansive collection of Dali’s works, the museum offers educational programs for adults and children as well as rotating special exhibits and events. These special exhibits are worth planning your trip around their specific dates. The 3rd largest facility of its kind in the U.S., located in St. Petersburg, is The Florida Holocaust Museum which pays tribute to Holocaust victims and survivors, using the lessons of the Holocaust to educate through awareness and understanding of past genocides. Visitors will have the opportunity to see photographs, memorabilia, books, films, videos, even a boxcar used to transport people to concentration camps, and other material from and about the era. Also located in St. Petersburg, the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum was named after the man who launched Black History Month. Primarily used as a venue to host community events and lavish special events, the mission of this museum is to preserve, present, and interpret African American history, promoting an understanding of the African American community. Check out timely events being hosted at the museum as often times they are some of the best in St. Petersburg. One of Florida's premier cultural attractions, the Florida International Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian, offering diverse rotating national and international exhibitions such as Vatican Splendors, The Story of Dogs, Diana a Celebration and many more to come.
