Durango Activities & Attractions

A ride aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is an outing not to be missed. The historic railway has been in continuous operation for more than126 years, and though the line was created to haul gold and silver from the mountains, people soon learned that the view was unparalleled and a reason to ride the rails in and of itself. Hop on board the authentic coal-fired, steam-powered train and set your sights on the beauty that surrounds you.

Durango Mountain Resort is a year-round adventure outing just 25 miles north of town. During the winter months you’ll enjoy amazing trails for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ski biking, and more. During summertime you can explore the majestic mountains by foot as you hike through gorgeous scenery, on a mountain bike as you cruise down the trails, and capture the view during a scenic chairlift ride. During either season, Purgatory Village will also delight you with shops and restaurants, making a trip to Durango Mountain Resort an unforgettable day trip.

Mesa Verde National Park will take you back in time to an age when the Ancestral Pubeloans lived in the mysterious cliff dwellings. Explore the one-room berths, ceremonial houses, and villages that make up the adobe buildings. The park is open year-round with a variety of seasonal offerings. Start your visit at the Far View Visitor Center where you can purchase tickets to view the Cliff House or Balcony Palace, join a ranger-led tour, hike the trails to the mesa top sites, and drive the Top Loop Road for an amazing view of the park. You can’t miss this world famous historic site!

As far as activities to satisfy the adventurer and thrill seeker, Durango provides an unusually large number of alternatives to fill up your days. Rafting down the river is a riot and never boring. Southfork horseback riding offers incredible scenery off the beaten path and possibly a true cowboy. Durango's Soaring Club offers rides in soaring planes that supposedly make one feel like she's drifting like a bird. Mountain Bike Specialists take you thousands of feet up the Great Divide so you can ride down on bikes like crazy tourists. What a thrill! Don't miss Durango, Colorado. As bed and breakfast destinations go, this one sizzles - or bathes you in the Southwestern sun - whichever you prefer.
