Museums, Galleries and Theatre

Aspen certainly doesn't lack for galleries, museums or theatre. During the summer, Theater in the Park performs both musicals and plays, while the Aspen Stage group presents staged readings of original work at different venues. The Aspen Art Museum hosts a variety of exhibitions featuring established contemporary artists along with classes for aspiring painters. Nested on the Rio Grande Trail, the Aspen Art Museum is one of the most scenic art museums in the country, well worth a visit. The E.S. Lawrence Gallery is a fascinating gallery to visit, housing rare, original pieces from internationally renowned artists such as Steve Hanks, Zvonomir Mihanovic, and Leon Bronstein. To orientate oneself on Aspen’s rich history, bed and breakfast visitors must stop by the Wheeler/Stallard Museum. Once home to Jerome B. Wheeler in 1888, the house is now home to the Aspen Historical Society. Showcasing special artifacts and exhibits that tell Aspen’s story, this living museum is a must see. The Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum chronicles Aspen’s mining boom which lasted for two decades during the late 1800s. The museum features 20 exhibits spinning the tale of Aspen’s silver boom, and bust. Curious bed and breakfast guests who enjoy a little scare will find Aspen’s infamous Ashcroft Ghost Town an eerie experience. Located 10 miles from Aspen, this abandoned town, founded in the 1880s by Charles B. Culver and W.F. Coxhead, offers an interesting walking tour.
