Audubon Sanctuaries
With over ten miles of walking trails, 300 acres of woodlands and nearly 200 species of birds, the Jean Ellen duPont Shehan Audubon Sanctuary is an ideal place to escape to a shoreline paradise. On a 950-acre peninsula bordered by three creeks, the sanctuary offers activities ranging from hiking, canoeing, bird watching and educational conservation tours. Open 365 days a year and free to the public is the nearby Pickering Creek Audubon Center, only about 12 miles out of town. Not only is there a 400-acre “working farm,” which reflects the agricultural heritage of the region, but there is a diverse variety of habitats to explore, from marshes and meadows to forests and wetlands. It is a perfect place to learn about the environment and the unique ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay area.
