The "Best of Rural Missouri Magazine" named Hermann "Most Beautiful Town in Missouri" and beautiful it is with a wealth of historic ambiance and the unforgettable views of the rolling hills that have captured the hearts of many visitors throughout the years.

The history of Hermann dates back to the1830s when the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia founded the Gasconade County. They chose Hermann as their new colony not only because it resembled the Rhine Valley, but they were also searching for a place where the people could remain a true German society. However, the first settlers that arrived were stunned by the rugged terrain of the land, but with nowhere else to turn they made due and planted vineyards along the hillside. Within ten years the winemakers celebrated their first Weinfest and visitors came from St. Louis to view the vineyards and to savor the flavors of the wine. The wine industry flourished and Hermann was a busy river port town until the onset of World War I, Prohibition and the Great Depression. The town managed to survive and through the endurance of the people today Hermann's wine industry produces a third of the states production.
