Shopping & Dining
The shopping in Hermann is not only marvelous, but what you would expect from a quaint historical German American town. The lovely historical buildings line the streets with galleries, specialty and antique shops that will take you back in time with an endless array of unique and one of a kind gift items. There are German imports such as smokers, cuckoo clocks and steins as well as folk and primitive artwork, ceramic sculptures and traditional American crafts and artwork by local artists. But when it's time for lunch or a quick break in-between all that wonderful shopping, try a sandwich at one of the coffee shops or relax and enjoy an authentic German dish and a glass of beer at one of the pubs or restaurants. The best part about dining in Hermann is the superb atmosphere that surrounds the exquisite dishes prepared by the chefs. Some of the best German food in America is prepared right here in Hermann "the sausage capitol of Missouri" and the specialties may include: venison sausage, bratwurst or leberwurst, beef roulades, stuffed breast of veal, spaetzle (cut noodles or dumplings), potato gratin, red cabbage or sauerkraut and for desert delicious black forest cake or a tasty apple strudel. Hermann also offers continental cuisine as well as pizza and burgers but don't forget to try a robust glass of local wine with your lunch or dinner.
