Situated in the mountains of western Honduras is Santa Rosa de Copán. This lovely village offers a remarkable alternative to the oft-visited islands. Its cool mountain climate, fine colonial architecture and affability combine to make Santa Rosa de Copán one of the region's most agreeable places to visit.

Santa Rosa not only makes a great base for day trips to the surrounding areas, it is also noted for its excellent handrolled cigars produced by Flor de Copán (of the famous Zino line). The factory welcomes visitors to view the process of cigar making, and samples are available for sale at the factory outlet, two blocks west of the central plaza. Santa Rosa is also known among Hondurans as a center of cultural activity. Casa de la Cultura offers a library, frequent exhibitions, performances, readings, and concerts. Coffee lovers will want to visit Beneficio Maya, where fine coffee is graded and roasted for export.

Santa Rosa presents some of the best processions in the nation. During the week before Easter there are six processions conducted in full dress with street theater reenactments of the Easter story. The most impressive is the Holy Cross Procession, or Via Crucis in which the entire route is festooned with flowers. Don’t miss the candlelit Women's Procession, when “Mary” and her followers grieve Jesus' death.
