Introduction & History

Visitors, artists, photographers and writers come from all over the world to experience beautiful Calgary. The views of the remarkable snow capped Rocky Mountains and the city's unique skyline at dusk will take your breath away. Enjoy the friendly people, the diverse cultures and the rich history this great city has to offer.

The frontier settlement of Calgary was founded in 1875 and it was named Fort Calgary after Calgary Bay on Scotland's Isle of Mull. Upon the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883, the settlement flourished. Calgary was soon incorporated as a town and within ten years it became a city. The Dominion Governments program leased grazing land to the new settlers that were interested in "Homesteading". Cattle ranching and agriculture soon became a vital part of the economy. In 1914, the discovery of oil and gas brought newfound growth to the city. Unfortunately, by the 80’s the ups and downs of the oil industry had a profound impact on the city's development. The city's official’s foresight of the future introduced new industries such as technologies, engineering, finance and telecommunications.
