History
Originally named Chuan Island when patrolled by the British Navy, and then later named Admiral Island; Salt Spring Island got its official name from the Geographic Board of Canada in 1906. The first settlers arrived in 1859, drawing their families to the island to establish farms and businesses. Salt Spring Island is now known as one of North America’s best small art towns and is the largest of a group of islands tucked away in the Strait of Georgia between mainland Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Salt Spring Island even has its own currency bought and spent on the island. Salt Spring Dollars are 100% redeemable into the national currency, and limited editions, as well as fine silver coins, feature Salt Spring Island artwork on the back, making them beautiful collector’s pieces. Salt Spring Dollars are legally known as “gift certificates” and help to raise funds for worthwhile community projects.
