In 1843, the city of Victoria (named after England's Queen Victoria), began as a Hudson Bay Company trading post. By 1858, with the onset of the Fraser Valley gold rush, Victoria's ports flourished and throughout the 19th century trade and commerce were the staple of the economy. Today, the city's industry still encompasses shipbuilding, machine manufacturing and forest products with development in agriculture, marine and forestry research. The city is also highly regarded for its excellent educational institutions such as the University of Victoria as well as its outstanding quality of life.
