Introduction & History
Welcome to Saint John, “The Fundy City,” where historic sites, natural wonders, and lively festivities will delight and entertain visitors. Steeped in history and culture and surrounded by glorious outdoor recreational exploits, Saint John is a perfectly pleasing Canadian destination on the waterfront.
Located at the mouth of Saint John River on the Bay of Fundy, Saint John is New Brunswick’s largest city. The original French explorers arrived at the mouth of the river on the feast day of St. John the Baptist and decided to name it in his honor. The first permanent French settlement was located at Portland Point on the east side of Saint John Harbor. The British occupied the fort in 1758 but were defeated by American revolutionaries in 1775. In 1783 the settlement developed into two establishments, Parr Town and Carleton, until 1785 when the two communities combined to be Saint John, Canada’s first incorporated city. The Great Fire of 1877 reduced the city to ashes, but with foreign relief funds and the hard labor of Irish immigrants who arrived during the Great Famine in Ireland, the city was rebuilt in brick and stone.
