Dining Out
Obviously, Montreal offers exceptional French cuisine, but some of North America's most innovative chefs have also seamlessly blended French, Asian and Latin flavors, using the freshest local ingredients. Immigrants from all over the world have also contributed to the mix, creating a delightful mélange of international dining.
For fine dining, try Cube, which was voted Best of City. A hip crowd frequents the place, and the menu changes regularly, depending on what's in season. Specializing in French cuisine, they also offer a cocktail bar and a raw bar, which serves everything in an uncooked state, from oysters to ceviche and carpaccio. Another restaurant voted Best of City is Gibby. This charming restaurant is housed in a 200-year old building, with exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and traditional Québecois furnishings. They specialize in steak and fresh seafood dishes cooked to perfection.
For more affordable fare, try Schwartz’s Deli. Founded in 1927, Schwartz’s specialty is smoked meat, and people come from far and wide to savor this finely prepared delicacy. Other offerings include steak, chicken, liver and plenty of side dishes like coleslaw, French fries and pickles. The food is well prepared and offered in copious portions. Tao serves wonderful Chinese food, with a varied menu that focuses on Cantonese. The General Tao chicken is excellent as is the hot and sour soup, the scallops with ginger and garlic, and the vegetarian tofu pot. Portions are generous and presentation is aesthetically pleasing.
In February, Montréal chefs tantalize our taste buds during the 11-day Montréal High Lights Festival. Several events and activities including concerts, exhibitions and culinary and wine workshops take place all around town.
