Dahlonega, Georgia’s history is most closely tied to the Gold Rush though also to the Cherokee Indians. Gold was discovered in a rich area of Cherokee land in 1828, bringing a vast number of miners to Lumpkin County. Dahlonega, a Cherokee word meaning “yellow money,” became the government seat of the county. It was decided that a United States Branch Mint would be built in Dahlonega, and construction began in 1835 and the Mint produced its first coin in 1838. During the height of the Gold Rush the number of miners in Dahlonega was substantial and the Mint received most of its gold from the immediate area. The influx of miners pushed the Cherokee out of the area, with one of the infamous Cherokee Removal Forts standing near present-day downtown Dahlonega and housing many of their people before they were forced to walk “The Trail of Tears.” In 1849 the California Gold Rush drew miners from Dahlonega out west and mining in the Georgia hills began to dwindle. The Mint closed its doors and shut down operations forever on June 1, 1861. Prince Memorial Hall of North Georgia College & State University exists today on the granite foundation of the original Mint. Today Dahlonega, Georgia exists as a lovely tourist destination near the Georgia Mountains, enticing visitors with charming, historic bed and breakfasts.
