Amsterdam, Netherlands City Guide

For over 20 years, Pamela Lanier's Amsterdam, Netherlands Travel Guide has been your connection to Amsterdam's tourism community with invaluable details on local attractions, restaurants, shopping, museums, history, outdoor recreation and more.

Outdoors

If you’re in the mood for natural beauty, the “pride and joy” of Amsterdam can be found in the botanical gardens of De Hortus. Almost 400 years old, this jewel within the city has evolved from an herb garden for Amsterdam’s doctors and pharmacists into a live museum with more than six thousand plant varieties. After a rambling walk through De Hortus, find your way to the largest park in Amsterdam, Vondelpark. During the summer months, visitors flock to the open air theatre for free concerts and theatre. Youngsters will delight in the summertime children’s shows as well as the six play areas, large playground, and skate rental in the park. Children and adults alike will also fall in love with Artis Zoo, home not only to the zoo but also an aquarium, geological museum and planetarium, zoological museum, and a botanical garden. Over two centuries old, Artis Zoo is brimming with life and discovery. For more fun and fresh air, head over to the Albert Cuyp Market where you may peruse more than 300 stalls selling clothes, produce, and an assortment of other goods. The market is the busiest in Europe and is particularly popular on Saturdays.

For a bit of family fun before dinnertime, head to Tun Fun Speelpark where children ages 1-12 years can climb and crawl around a fabulous indoor play area. They’ll be thrilled to burn off some energy on the trampolines, slides, and indoor soccer field. If your kids need a fast-paced adventure, head over to Race Planet for Kids where they can speed around in pedal cars, airplanes, and electric Formula One cars and can climb about on one of the Netherlands’ biggest climbing structures. Madame Tussauds wax museum is unique experience where visitors can meet the likes of Justin Timberlake, Spiderman, and even the Pope in person! And, before you head in for the night, don’t forget to stop by one of the 8 windmills located in the city. After all, they’re synonymous with the Netherlands!
