Amsterdam, Netherlands City Guide

For over 20 years, Pamela Lanier's Amsterdam, Netherlands Travel Guide has been your connection to Amsterdam's tourism community with invaluable details on local attractions, restaurants, shopping, museums, history, outdoor recreation and more.

Museums

If you decide to fill your day with history and art, there are more than 50 museums to choose from. The Van Gogh Museum is a popular destination, housing the largest collection of his work under one roof. There you can marvel over more than 200 of Vincent Van Gogh’s canvases, 500 drawings, 700 written documents, as well as collections of work from other artists, and a section dedicated to the history of the museum itself. In addition to the Van Gogh Museum, the Museumplein in Amsterdam features the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum.

For an intimate experience, and the next stop along your artistic and historical outing, visit the Rembrandt House Museum or the Anne Frank House. Every year, the Anne Frank House exhibits a theme related to World War II, and Anne’s story is told using quotes from her diary, giving visitors a sense of the atmosphere during hiding. To make a jump from the past to the present, a visit to NEMO, located next to Central Station, will give you a hands-on science experience and an unparalleled view over Amsterdam. NEMO, a modern architectural feat shaped like a ship and with a rooftop piazza, is home to the largest science center in the Netherlands. Your three floor voyage inside NEMO will take you on an adventure of discovery as you learn about scientific themes through experimentation.
