A Taste of Belize City

Influenced by ancient Mayan flavors and rooted in Latin American culture, the typical cuisine in Belize City is loaded with flavor and easy on a bed and breakfast traveler’s wallet. The traditional “pan-Belizean” meal found all over the city consists of red beans, “dirty” rice and chicken. Corn and cassava are staples as well as tamales, panades (fried maize shells with beans or fish), garnaches (fried tortillas with beans, cheese and cabbage), and escabeche (onion soup). You will find fish and other fresh seafoods on just about every menu with complimentary flavors like coconut milk, lime and hot chilis. Tropical fruits are abundant from papaya and guava, to guanabana (a sweet fruit used to make ice cream, sorbets and candies), and tiny, sweet “honey bananas” the size of your fingers. Due to the large amount of immigration to Belize City you will also find excellent Chinese, Indian, Nigerian and other international foods. While you’re there, be sure to try a seaweed shake, a popular and tasty drink to cool off from the Caribbean heat, which locals claim to be an elixir drink providing vitality, virility, and verve.
