Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K. City Guide

For over 20 years, Pamela Lanier's Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K. Travel Guide has been your connection to Edinburgh's tourism community with invaluable details on local attractions, restaurants, shopping, museums, history, outdoor recreation and more.

Shopping

Start on the Old Town’s Royal Mile for Scottish cashmere sweaters and the finest of Scottish lambs wool, famous worldwide, antiques, Scottish music, Scottish bagpipes, kilts and tartans, and tins of Scottish shortbread.

Outside the Old Town, the main shopping street is Princes Street, with major department stores such as Debenham’s, Fraser’s, BHS, and Mark’s & Spencer’s. Two independent department stores are Jenner’s, also on Princes Street, and Harvey Nichols, at St Andrews Square.

The traditional gentility of George Street, lined with chic clothes shops, offers high-end goods behind appealing storefronts. For antiques, the best bets are Thistle Street, Broughton Street, Victoria Street and Causewayside, with more trendy shops selling gifts and souvenirs. Want to avoid tartan overdose? Try Cockburn Street and the Grassmarket.

Shopping hours are now more relaxed and many of the main city center shops are open on Sundays and until 7:30 or 8:00 pm on Thursdays.
