Guadalajara, Mexico City Guide

For over 20 years, Pamela Lanier's Guadalajara, Mexico Travel Guide has been your connection to Guadalajara's tourism community with invaluable details on local attractions, restaurants, shopping, museums, history, outdoor recreation and more.

Shopping & Dining

The abundant shopping in Guadalajara will not disappoint the avid shopper. The shopping malls offer upscale products including a choice of restaurants and cinemas. But the true Mexican shopping experience, where bargaining is encouraged, is at the Mercado Libertad market in the downtown area. Vendors at this colorful market sell all sorts of handcrafted items, pottery and silver jewelry. For a day trip, try shopping in the Guadalajara suburbs of Tlaquepaque & Tonala. Tlaquepaque offers a quaint, traffic free atmosphere and many superb specialty shops. The laid back atmosphere of the town as well as the local food and music are a delight. Tonala is a lovely artisan's haven where ceramics, pottery and other items are designed and sold in a factory setting.

The typical day of meals in Guadalajara goes something like this: a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs, juice, pan dulce (sweet bread), hot chocolate or coffee; a large lunch around 1-3pm (lunch is the main meal of the day, not dinner); appetizers and drinks about 8pm, followed by dinner between 9-10pm (small portions, often just coffee and bread since the larger meal was at lunch).

Mexican food is loved across the globe, but nothing beats Mexican food in Mexico (don’t expect it to taste like home). Local favorites like Pozole (soup made with hominy, meat and a clear broth) and Tortas Ahogadas (made with pork, chili and vegetables) will be found on just about every local menu and are well worth the try. We can thank Mexico for beans, corn, squash, tomatoes, jicama, chocolate, avocado, papaya, guava, vanilla, dozens of spices, and of course, chile peppers.
