Glass Bottom Boats and Scuba Diving
Glass bottom boats, open water snorkeling and deep sea scuba diving are all wonderful ways to experience the marine life of Negril’s vast waters . The water is peacefully calm with the temperature ranging from 78 to 84 degrees depending on time of year. With visibility of up to 100 feet, expect to see elk horn, stag horn, brain and star coral, triggerfish, angels, starfish, eels, sea turtles, sponges and much more. There are certification programs for first time scuba divers or those wanting to refresh their skills. Many bed and breakfasts rent snorkeling equipment so you do not have to haul the equipment from the mainland, or will recommend a good vendor near the beach. Either way, ask your innkeepers what they recommend and find out what other traveler’s never learn from the locals.
The Negril Coral Reef Preservation Society, whose purpose it is to protect the coral reef system, in 1998, declared a 160 square kilometer area, the Negril Marine Park. Here divers and snorkelers alike can appreciate the beauty of underwater life. Native to these waters are angel fish, triggerfish, starfish and octopus. The visibility and tranquility of the water make this a perfect place for snorkeling and diving.
