Merida, the capital city of the state of Yucatan, is an historic gem about two hundred miles inland from Cancun. Mostly untouched by the commercial tourism that defines the coastal cities, Merida is a practical hub to explore numerous Mayan pyramids, ruin sites and ecological wonders. Known as the "White City" because of the large use of white limestone and white paint, this traditional city depicts much of the splendor of Colonial Mexico.
Left in seclusion for many years because of the difficulty of traveling to Merida the people of this region have cultivated a distinct contemporary society that is unique in Mexico. The people are warm and friendly and the city is filled with architectural and historic treasures as well as interesting art galleries, restaurants with sumptuous regional food and a bustling nightlife. It may be off the beaten path, but Merida is definitely worth the trip. |
