Shopping

The traditional Mexican markets are popular in Oaxaca and Benito Juarez is one of the best. Shoppers will lose all sense of time in the authentic Mexican ambiance as they stroll down what feels like endless rows of typical vendors. If searching for a particular textile, black clay bowl, wooden figure or metal carving, this colorful market is right where you want to be. The market also featured typical Mexican delicacies. At the entrance, you will find chicharrones (fried pork skin), cecina (thinly sliced grilled pork coated in chili), tasajo (grilled beef) and tripitas secas (fried tripe). Next, the chocolate and bread vendors. At the end of the market you will find barbecue eateries where you can stop for a snack or full meal.

For an afternoon respite from the Mexican sun, endless markets and cobblestone streets, find a seat in a local café to indulge in some Mexican chocolate, a ‘café de olla’ (coffee made with cinnamon and cane sugar), a Mezcal with lime, salt and tequila, a cool, fresh fruit juice (ask for the agua del día), or cold Mexican beer.
