Playa del Carmen Activities & Attractions

La Playa means beach in Spanish, so a good place to spend your day is seaside. The sparkling blue Caribbean waters and shimmering white sands make for an excellent spot to park yourself in a beach chair to soak up the sun and enjoy a few cold drinks from the beachside bar. The Playa main beach begins at the ferry docks and is impeccably clean as well as tended by lifeguards. Most of the beach chairs are rental only, but a few hotels and bars will allow you to use their chairs if you purchase drinks. The white sand can get quite hot underneath the strong rays of the sun, so be sure to wear sandals unless you want to walk only along the water’s edge. Don your Pareo, an Indonesian sarong, and set out for the sandy shores of Playa del Carmen’s white sand beaches.

Cenotes are natural limestone and coral wells leading to underground rivers, caverns, and caves. These freshwater pools offer two forms of cenote diving, swimming into a cave beyond the reach of natural sunlight and cavern diving near the entrance of a cave and within the realm of sunlight. Make sure you are accompanied by a qualified cave diving guide or undergo cave diving certification through a qualified operator. If a less hazardous and adventuresome outing is all you desire, the cenotes offer excellent views of stalactite and stalagmite formations as well as a rainbow of tropical fish.

Playa del Carmen is an excellent bed and breakfast destination for taking a guided tour. Enjoy adventures ranging from horseback riding and swimming with dolphins to jungle safaris and archaeological site visits. Indulge in a lobster dinner aboard a day/night cruise, go scuba diving in Cozumel or Cancun, go deep sea fishing at night, and take a speed boat ride through the Mexican Riviera. Tours in the areas surrounding Playa del Carmen are perfect for travelers of all ages and most include transportation to/from your lodging and meals as well. Talk with your bed and breakfast innkeepers for assistance planning your guided tour, they’ll be happy to help you.
