What do to in Captain Cook

Captain Cook offers plenty of activities that do not require stamina or strength. Amy B. H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden features 200 species of plants that grew in the traditional farms and native forests of Kona before Cook arrived in the late 18th century. Visitors will experience first hand the biographical zones that exist in this diverse landscape: coastal, dry forest, agricultural, and upland forest. Children will delight in the garden’s native insect house filled with butterflies.

The Koa Coffee Plantation, gracefully situated on the slopes of the Hawaiian volcano, Mauna Loa, at an ideal elevation of 2,500 feet, produces what Forbes says is the “Best Coffee in America.” Winner of a Kona cupping contest, this family-owned coffee plantation flourishes in Captain Cook and offers private tours scheduled in advance.

Uchida Coffee Farm Museum, run by the Kona Historical Society, is a working farm set in a coffee plantation. Guests will learn about the Japanese immigrants who built this farm and how coffee has affected this graceful culture since the early 1800’s. After a leisurely day in and around Captain Cook, consider taking in a movie in nearby Kailua-Kona where most major box office films are shown.
