History

Polynesians were the first to arrive on the shores of Hilo Bay over 1500 years ago, arriving in double-hulled canoes. Having followed bird patterns and clouds formations to locate the islands, these natives were soon to become the thread of Hilo culture. Westerner missionaries later arrived in the 1800s to build churches and new settlements. Hilo began to flourish as a trade mecca when Asian foreigners came to the island to work the sugar plantation and produce a raw material that is still in great demand. Today, Hilo is home to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, a favorite gift to take home to loved ones. The company grows and produces macadamia nut products that are shipped all over the world.
