Gardens & Parks

Bed and breakfast travelers will be mesmerized by the exotic plants Hilo flourishes throughout the year. Bed and breakfast travelers can do so by visiting one of Hilo’s many gardens which preserves a collection of plants found no where else. One of which is the Lil’iuolalani Park & Gardens, a 30- acre botanical garden named after Queen Liliuokalani, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. The gardens feature a magnificent display of Hawaiian and Asian plantings. Bed and breakfast travelers can enjoy the scents of the garden’s large array of flowers and trees while walking along the paths that lead to the bonsai carp ponds, bridges and pagodas.

The Nani Mau Gardens preserve the natural environment of Onomea Bay. There is a charming view of the ocean from the gardens and the waterfalls are breathtaking. Garden paths are lined with colorful local plantings and the ginger garden permeates a sweet scent in the air.

Hawaii’s volcanoes are one of the world’s greatest natural wonders and definitely a favorite place to visit for bed and breakfast travelers. Two of the most active volcanoes, the Kilauea and Mauna Loa, are located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The best view is probably by helicopter but they can also be seen by car. Stop by the park’s visitor center for maps and information before venturing out. The center also offers a very interesting and educational film for the whole family on how the Hawaiian Islands were formed from volcanic eruptions. You can also ask your bed and breakfast innkeeper for some advice on where to go and what to do in Hilo.
