Sydney History
Although Australia began as a land of British convicts in the late 1700’s, it was transformed into a thriving free society by the insightful Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie. During his tenure from 1810 to 1821, Macquarie oversaw the construction of Sydney as designed by Francis Greenway, a convicted forger and trained architect. The creation of a civil society, combined with the discovery of gold in Australia, led to a surge of immigration from Britain, Ireland, and the rest of the world. Industrialization brought even more growth, and by the 20th century, Sydney had a population of over one million people. In 2000, Sydney hosted the Summer Olympic Games which further stimulated the economy and solidified Sydney’s status as a world class city. For bed and breakfast visitors, Sydney offers an eclectic blend of European, Asian, and Aboriginal cultures with a laid-back vibe that creates a remarkable atmosphere for an unforgettable bed and breakfast experience.
