Sydney Shopping
The shops of Sydney offer a broad range of items from international name brands to Aboriginal art, craft bazaars and flea markets. The Strand Arcade is a Victorian shopping arcade best known for the Australian designers it showcases. The Queen Victoria Building (QVB) is a notable shopping destination as it has been a market place since 1810. The Romanesque façade was added in 1896 and extensively restored during the 1980’s. The remarkable architecture, reminiscent of a bygone era, is worth seeing even if you have no interest in shopping. Galleries Victoria could be considered the modern alternative to the QVB shopping experience. In operation since 1838, David Jones is Australia’s oldest department store as well as the oldest department store in the world still doing business under its original name. Castlereagh Street is home to the international fashion houses including Chanel, DKNY, Cartier, Ferragamo and others. If you are looking for traditional Australian items such as koalas and didgeridoos, read the labels carefully to be sure you get an authentic souvenir and not an imported knock-off.
