Today, Valley Forge serves as the perfect base for exploring the history-steeped countryside. When fall arrives, Valley Forge National Historical Park becomes a lovely tapestry of gold, red and orange. Visit Mill Grove, the wildlife sanctuary along the charming banks of the Perkiomen Creek. This was artist-naturalist John James Audubon's first home in America. Lovely trails sprinkled with wildflowers invite visitors to take pleasure in the same landscape that inspired one of the world's premier wildlife artists.
Another fun stop is the Peter Wentz Farmstead at harvest time. The 97-acre estate includes a German-Georgian farmstead where George Washington resided while preparing for the Battle of Germantown.
Maulsby House was the home of Quaker abolitionists George Corson and Martha Maulsby Corson, and it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad where fugitives could hide in the attic. Abolition Hall (behind Maulsby House) was built by George Corson to give abolitionists a place to air their views. Among those who spoke there were the abolitionists William Lloyd Garrison and Lucretia Mott. |
