History
Founded in 1608 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, Québec City was the center of New France, which at the time extended from the St. Lawrence River in the northeast down to the Gulf of Mexico. From 1763, under British rule, Québec City strengthened its commercial trade by exporting lumber, boats, and wheat to England. In fact, its thriving shipbuilding industry employed half of the population. In 1791, the city's leading political role was confirmed when it became the seat of the government of Lower Canada. It later became the capital of the province of Québec in 1867. By the end of the 19th century, Québec City was the political capital, a cultural center with a university, a tourist destination and trade hub.
