Piasa Bird
The Piasa Bird is a local legend in the Alton area. Its foundings go back to 1673 when Father Jacques Marquette, in recording his famous journey down the Mississippi River with Louis Joliet, described the "Piasa" as a birdlike monster painted high on the bluffs along the Mississippi River, where the city of Alton, Illinois now stands.


Confederate Prison
Alton Civil War Prison was established February 9, 1862 when the first Confederate prisoners were delivered there. The prison was housed in the abandoned Illinois State Penitentiary built in 1831 and located near the Mississippi River in Alton Illinois.


Clark Bridge
Funded by a bond-selling effort, the cost of the first Clark Bridge was $1.8 million. Construction started in July 1927 and the bridge was completed in July 1928, with the grand opening held on July 16.

National Great Rivers Museum
The National Great Rivers Museum is a 12,000-square-foot facility founded by the collaboration of the Corps and the nonprofit Meeting of the Great Rivers Foundation and tells the story of the Mississippi River.


Alton Museum of History and Art
The Alton Museum of History and Art was founded in 1971 to preserve the great heritage of the Alton community.


Camp River Dubois
Camp River Dubois is home to the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site which was designated as the location for one of the National Signature Events for the commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial.
