Sedona History

The first settler to lay claim to the Sedona area was J.J. Thompson. Word spread fast and soon pioneers started rolling into town to establish a "fruitful" farming community. Frank Pendley, another early resident, created an innovative irrigation system -- one that is still used today -- which attracted even more farmers. But it was the natural beauty of the Red Rock country and the mild, dry climate that brought T.C. and Sedona Schnebly to the area. At the time, the homestead was called Upper Oak Creek and Camp Gardens, but when T.C. opened the first post office in the back of his house, the postal service said the names were too long. In the end, T.C. suggested his wife's name, Sedona and sentimentality and practicality won out. In 1902 Sedona was officially approved by postal officials and has remained so ever since.

For some more in depth details on Sedona's history visit the Sedona Historical Society. The museum focuses on the lifestyles of the pioneers that settled the town and prides itself on preserving and teaching the history of Sedona. The main part of the museum is the former farm home of the Jordan family, including the restored one-room cabin built in 1930. On display are many of the family's original furnishings, farm tools and a special room commemorating the hundreds of films made in Sedona.
