History
Natchitoches is steeped in history from its native American roots to the exploration of the French in the late 1600's. It wasn't until the mid 1800's that this cultural community became the first American settlement during the Louisiana Purchase. Plantations were born to harvest the ever popular tobacco and indigo. Once the cotton industry took hold, cotton became the crop of choice. The city thrived as a river port until the course of the Red River changed. Today, the port is primarily used for the exportation of lumber.
